I have almost a decade of teaching experience, and consider myself part of a new wave of music educators who are creating a sustainable approach to music education that prioritizes mental and physical wellness.

I believe the best students are produced in a low stress environment where positive reinforcement is standard, and student wellness is prioritized and taught from the beginning. That being said, I believe enjoyment of music comes from confidence and growth which is developed through time spent on building a rock solid sense of fundamentals.

My studio is for the student who wants to go beyond the basics, and explore the world of music and how it can help them grow.

All of my students receive a weekly lesson of 30, 45, or 60 minutes. I expect my students to practice for at least the duration of their lesson 5 times a week. However, I recognize that many students these days have a packed schedule, so I prioritize teaching my students how to get their most out of their practice whether they have 10 minutes or 60.

Flute

I specialize in teaching aspiring flutists who are eager to go beyond the basics. My ideal student is passionate about playing the flute and enjoys exploring their full potential.

I emphasize a strong foundational approach, where students learn posture, breathing, and playing techniques that set them up for long-term success. Beginners are introduced to the flute using The Young Flute Player by Karen North, supplemented with scales, long tones, introductory etudes, and practice strategies. As students progress to intermediate and advanced levels, we build upon these fundamentals with varied repertoire, advanced scale patterns, extended techniques, and audition training. Advanced or college-bound students also receive instruction in the basics of pedagogy, conducting, piano, aural training, and singing.

While I am happy to work with students on their school music, my goal is to teach in a way that makes school repertoire feel easy so we can focus on deeper exploration of flute literature and orchestral works.

Students are encouraged to participate in youth orchestras, flute competitions, Royal Conservatory of Music exams, honor band auditions, and All-State auditions.

While students as young as five can begin learning the flute, I generally accept students starting at age ten. I enjoy working with serious students. This doesn't mean you need to be pursuing a music career, but I do expect consistent practice and a genuine investment in progress that is not common in younger children. Passionate students under age ten will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Voice

As a voice teacher, I specialize in teaching contemporary and musical theatre style. My lessons are built upon a strong foundation of breathing, understanding of vocal anatomy, and developing understanding and sustainable usage of the different vocal styles and registers.

Every singer is unique however there are fundamentals of singing that must be developed regardless of style. Each student must learn how to sustainably breathe, how to develop and find resonance, and employ healthy vocal choices such as mixing. Students will also receive an appropriate vocal warm up and vocal exercise regiment for their age and vocal range.

I also encourage all of my students to practice piano so that they can develop solid skills in note reading, understanding of rhythm, as well as to assist them with solfege, warm ups and vocal exercises at home. I usually assign students a learn on your own piano book and we do periodic check ins.

Musical Theatre focused students receive audition coaching, help putting together audition books, as well as character focused musical expression training.

I usually recommend voice training begin around ages 11-13 to allow for some vocal development to have started. Younger students will be assessed on a case by case basis.
